This week I blogged over at a shared blog that’s founded by one of my teachers, Jon Sharpe. City Consultations looks at signs of God’s hope in urban contexts. I wrote here on the topic of exegeting Seattle by photography, and included a few recent pictures from my exploration of the city.

This morning I preached at a friend’s church as he got hammered with that flu that’s going around. I asked the question, “if Jesus is so nice and loving, why did people want to kill him so often?”, worked from Luke 4, and talked about Jesus’ love of the outsider. If you want to listen, here’s the link on New Life Church @ North Bend’s website.  This church, which planted the same time as Mt. Si Vineyard did, is remaking itself as a missional community, and it’s fun to see them really digging into this shift in worldview.

    Absolutely LOVED (must I footnote it when I use it?) your idea of exegeting Seattle by photography. The place I’m working is in exegeting culture – its the thesis of my DMin dissertation that the church’s mission is clearly stated but we’ve done a horrid job of exegeting culture……

    Alan, I’m really happy that you ran into this! I’d love to hear more of your work and conclusions on exegesis of culture. Where are you studying?

    I”ve been shaped by a variety of sources in this area. In the non-academic world, reading The Celtic Way of Evangelism by Hunter showed me how Patrick of Ireland exegeted celtic culture.     I’m also really learning a lot from my studies at Bakke Graduate University (bgu.edu). The blog you found that post on is overseen by Jon Sharpe, who until recently taught there. He has written two good books with Ray Bakke on the topic of exegeting the city: Street Signs, and A Theology As Big As The City.
