In the class I just took at Bakke Graduate U on global Christian history I found that in Sept 07 there is class planned to learn about Celtic Christian history on-site in Ireland, visiting the monastic sites and learning from local theologians. I signed up on the spot, and then went home and told Shannon; she jumped in too… we’ll have to figure out the whole kids thing along the way to be sure 🙂

Meanwhile I’m reading a book that my uncle (living out his early retirement by working for REI) bought me:

It’s a nice travel book about a guy who sea kayaks around Ireland. On the way he visits a bunch of cultural sites out on the fringes of the island, including several monastic sites. Early on he tours Skellig Michael, which was one of the earliest Irish monasteries, settled in the 6th or 7th century. Here’s a picture of the island that hosted this monastery.

There’s a nice book about the site, entitled “The Forgotten Hermitage of Skellig Michael”, here. It appears to be out of print but the whole electronic version is available at that link.
