For all who are local:
You are invited to an informational evening on Saturday, June 25 for the purpose of raising awareness of the critical situation in the eastern African nation of Sudan and to raise money for relief efforts for the refugees of the genocide in that region.
As many of you are aware, for the past several years there has been a genocide occurring in Sudan. In a shockingly similar situation to the one that was documented in the movie Hotel Rwanda, there is ethnic cleansing (genocide) that is virtually unnoticed in the West. As of this moment, some 200,000 people have been murdered and more than 1.6 million people have been displaced from their homes and moved into refugee camps on the way to surrounding countries. The website http://www.savedarfur.org has more information.
We would love to invite you (and everybody you would like to bring with you) to an educational evening in two parts:
5:00 – 7:00: Watch the Academy Award-nominated movie Hotel Rwanda, starring Don Cheadle. [Note! This movie is rated PG-13 for violence and is not child-friendly due to its subject and depiction of the ethnic cleansing in Rwanda in 1994].
7:00 – 8:00: Participate in a slideshow by college photojournalist Rachel Havercroft (a friend of Pat’s brother), who recently returned from a trip to the Pachalla region of Sudan to document relief efforts by World Relief. I’ve included two photos from Rachel’s trip in this email.
Rachel’s slideshow is educational informative, and will include information about World Relief’s fundraising efforts to equip schools and dig freshwater wells for the refugees in the Pachalla region. [Note: This section is child-friendly.]
You’re welcome to attend either or both parts of the evening.
The evening is hosted by Mt. Si Vineyard Church and will be located at the Mt. Si Senior Center in North Bend at 411 Main Ave. S. in North Bend (directly west of the Ace Hardware store). You can find directions on our church’s website
