For a while he was releasing independant CDs and I’d heard he wasn’t leading in the vineyard anymore. welcome, chris. i love ryan’s stuff too, especially his dylan-flavored musicianship.

Missio Dei:

(Fast and furious typing her; jenkins speaks fast and with a lot of content. bear with me)

A very simple goal for 50 minutes; To desxcribe western christianity. or to destroy the idea tha tchirsitianity is a western religion.

presently around the world there are some 2 bill christians. largest contingent in 550m europe. 2nd is latin america 450m?; 3rd is africa with 360m.

No doubt that in the long run africa wins. by the end of this century africa will be

by 2050 thre could be 3bill christians, and % of those non-latino whites will be 1/5 or 1/6 of the whole.

the prayer of the african church planter.
a 7th day planter in africa prays “dear god, do not send us any more converts. we cannot handle them.”

another story: archbishop milango: it’s too much; every sunday there’s another new church to consecrate in the area. usualy 2, sometimes 3. more than mortal man could bear. none of his clergy have been paid in 6 months, and he has not yet presided over a funeral in which there are less than 12-15 bodies to bury. both epidemic-plague and new church growth in what will be the christian heartland.

average christian worldwide now: poor woman in west africa/china/brazilian/shantytown.

the largest christian populations in 2050 should be : us, mexico, brazil, nigeria, congo, ethiopia, china, philippines

not on that list; britain, france, italy, spain,

a figure obsessing the vatican: MORE CATHolic baptisms in philippines than in france italy spain poland DCOMBINED.

if you want to see global christianity, look at african american churches: pentecostal, healing, exprssive worship… that type of style.

most important change: a demographic change. birth rates in europe fallen far below replacement rates. the median age of pop of italy is 40. median age of uganda is 16. if iitaly wants to grow, it mus taccept immagrants, who will bring their religious styles.

today: clash of e=generations: old northern world vs yougng southern world. median age worldwide is age 24. 90% of younger half of world live in africa, asia, latinaamerica.

global south christianity is a women’s movement, or it is nothing. desmond tutu recently ordained his daughter as a priest. even those who do not ordain women, women are key converts and lay leaders. they bring their husbands and families into the church.

global south christianity is a healing movement or it is nothing. again and again. reflected in how the bible is read. in most global south churches and they read healing, they read the intent of the original

luke 8 is a wonderful collection of miracles stores popular in these churches. demons real. healing real. literal outflowing of god’s power.

if you are trying to present a mesasge to a global south community, healing must be right out front.

are yo uready? to deal with healing, exorcism? if not, do not go to africa or asia to work. fina nother line of work. i’m very seroius speaking to you here.

many good secular reasons why christianity is doing so well. ironically same reason why 30 years ago they might kill christianity altogether. modernized, secularized world. urvbanization immigration. all work for the benefit not just of religion but of very traditional-minded evangelical kinds of communities.

think of a place like lake os nigeria, a sleepy community a while ago.1950. today metro area has pop of 12m-25m by 2020. no government exxcept to steal (kleptocracy). if you’re a poor woma trying to hold the family together where do you go? to a religious community.

to understand the appeal of islam, understand it as an opportunity to provide health, welfare, education services in those communities. people do not join fund islamic movements out of an obsession for violence, but to get medical care.

christian fund, ev, pent churches are the ones that provide those services and they grow.
revival meetings now draw up to 2M per night there. MILLION.

Implications:
Missions;
Missionaries have a lousy image in popular culture. if there is a single source to form this image: “The Poisonwood Bible”..

largest, most successful social movemetn in HISTORY: pentecostal christianity. rise of christianity in africa 10%-46% .

If pentecostalism was its own religoius system, it woudl be 2nd or 3rd overall.

Christian History:
Didn’t happen where or how we think it does.
christian history: we think of chr starting in

by the time christian ministries reached london; they reached beijing. and ethipia. we have lost probably 2/3 of the story. re hae to recapture that story.
christian state: france, spain – through christian history the normal exp of chri is living as an opressed minority or majority under an opressive religion.

martyrdom, persecution, forced conversion are the norm through history.

read the revelation here and try to understnad it. then read it again in teh sudan and it’s a documentary of everyday life.

“chr was brought to korea in 1590s by the invading armies of an invading japanese catholic warlord” –

Book: “SIlence” by Japanese author – normative experiene of chri around hte world.

christianity doesn’t come with a wrranty. doesn’t ahve a core. specifically a geographical core. islam has a core: arbia, iraq, middle east in which it spreads out. never loses its core.

where core of christianity: originates in now palestine syria, whih are not christianity forever. palestine christian from 15% to 0.5% in last 100 yedars. middle eastern countries thought they’d be chr forever, but were wrong. France and Germany thought they’d be chrisitan forever and were wrong.

st. vincent de paul, 1640: Prot and cath killing each other, chr killing jews, everybody killing witches. “jesus said his church would last to the end of time. he never mentioned the world eaurope. the ch of the future is the churhc of s. america, africa, china and japan”. (Jenkins: an objectively verifiable prophecy)

Look in europe today and think what this means in terms of mission. Many people think of msision as going form the global north to the global south. those missionaries hada great goal (Henr benn) said aim of miss is the euthanasia of the mission. interesting use of the word. misisons->churches with local people who don’t even remember the missionaries. that’s what we want to see in africa. we want to put ourselves out of work.

europe is

kiev in ukraine is largest congregation in europe now. intersetng story: website: embassy of the best kingdom of god. church claims to raise from the dead, aids, cancer… I believe that they believe these things. planter, adelajia, is nigerian.

nigerians are one of the wrold’s great diaspora communities. nigerian capital of america is houston (80k nigerians here).

globalization in the church: nigerian to london.

the us is going to be different than europe becase it’s been in a much better state now. in the europe when old churches fail, they become a marketplace or mosque. here when a church fails, it becomse another church.

the great commission is to go and preach the gospel to the whole world. in phase 2, god makes it easier: preach the gospel to those who’ve come to you from your own home.

in terms of spreading the gospel, if you want to reach other cultures, they’re in your city. diaspora communities. transnational communities that authentically reflect the book of acts.

how do we reach global south christianity? they’re here, they’re next to you. dont reinvent the wheel; partner

if you remember nothing else
mission from north to south
mission from south to north, think

most important mission today is south to south. koreans -> middle east. (have a good theolgohy of martyrdom; they do). asians speaking to asians.

brazilians in africa. nigerians in india. those commjunities have repercussoins in our cities.

for a community like the vineyard, much of what you’re doing is sending the right message: sp warfare, healing are good messages.

the main thing is the key demographic fact: in not long 1/3 of americans will be latino or asian by origin. americans will be a majority-miniotory country before too long. take stock of that!!!

in order to reach a larger market, the next edition of my book will be “The next christendom: the revenge of the sith”

TRhe southern churchs are doing something right, because it is scary.
