The New York Times writes about the recent Burger King “Whopper Sacrifice” campaign, which gave Whoppers to Facebook users who would “unfriend” 10 of their friends for the promotion.
Too Many Online Friends? Time to Delete – NYTimes.com.
The campaign caused a great furor because it initially broke a Facebook rule – it notified the people who had been dropped that they were dumped for a Whopper.
The conversation has centered around the nature of friendship in Internet space, which is a great topic to think about. I think that Facebook just misuses the word “friend’ when it really just means “connection”, but it’s intentional about that language for specific reasons, which is why the discussion is quite passionate.
