Late morning session, Scot McKnight
Things I’ve been trying to deide how to title this session
1. Footnotes on Todd’s talk
2. AN apology for Rose’s gospel (defnse)
3. Mistakes misisonal folks avoid
I teach 2 courses at NOrth Park
1. Jesus of Nazareth (I get paid to teach Jesus, woohoo)
2. Survey of the whole Bible
Now I’m teaching woman, mary and jesus.
About 4 years ago I decided
How did Jesus do evangelism? He DIDN”T say, “do you raelize you’re a sinner and you need to invite me into your heart?” Nope.
About 50% of my christians are non-Christians. My courseis a laboratory in conversaion without me even doing it – I get to osbserve. About 5-10 students in evyr one of my Jesus classes were either becomign christians or making huge decisions that way.
Students really get into a vision of Jesus when you tell them what Jesus is trying to create. We live in a generation that doesn’t respond to sin as the previous gen did – or guilt. but these people like jesus. As dan kimball put it, people like jesus but not the church.
Re: the social gospels Walter RAuchenbush, German baptist at the beginning of 20th century – i find him fascinating, at times radically right. sometimes radically wrong.
The Lukan thread:
If you wanna be a follower of Jesus, he’s the one who’s right.
Luke 1: Mary says this: when the Kingdom comes, God being faithful to abraham was to bring a just society to israel. talkto that old man zecharaiah. luke 1:67 ff – he prophesied of salvation. salvation from enemies. who enemies? rome, herodians, etc. zech – salvation is abrahamic covenaqnt: land filled with jsutice so we can worship god as we wish.
the real question is this (sarcastically) : that’s JUSTG his mother; that’s JUSt the old man that raised that crazy boy John.
They said those things to Jeus too. I know this is real, because I imagineditas todd said last night 😉
They kibbutzed about torah, who was who in the bible.
John gets his head cut off because he preached what mary and zech should be preached.
jesus’ first sermon, referencing isaiah 61. spirit is on me – good news to the poor, (i learned this from my mother, jesus could have said), proclaim freedom for prisoners, recovery of sight for the blind, to set the opressed free, proclaim year of lord’s favor.
thhat it says. i’m the guy from isaiah.
THIS ISN’T THE SOCIAL GOSPEL; IT’S JESUS’ GOSPEL.
we make a huge mistake when we begin with giult, and not with an image of Jesus.
luke 6 – jesus blesses the very groups his motehr blessed; curses the groups his mother curses.
when john is in prison wondering if jesus is the one: go back and tell john the poor are hearing the good news, the deaf can hear… etc. i bring people to the table, create community for all.
pharasaid communithy: clean up and you can go to the table; jesus said eat with me and i will make you clean by being around me.
jesus has his own way of drawing people to himself. i don’t have to get in the way. here’s what jesus says; what do you think?
Mistake 1: Putting people in guilt before casting vision of Jesus.
Mistake 2: People begin with Gen 3, the Fall, before Gen 1 – eikons. made to glow with the presnce of God.
Story of Pierre, his little doll. cracked.
The message of the Bible is that god takes cracked eikons and restores them. eikons have relationships with god, self, others ,the system/world around us. those relationships are distorted by sin. the most documented proof of christian doctrine is original sin.
Mistake 3: Gen 4 – Romans 2 treated as waste of time; we jusmp to ‘all sinned and fallen short’. get to the good stuff, have jesus die… but wait, maybe this is what it’s all about: reation of community in this world to embody what god’s all about in community. israel, kingdom, church are what the bible is about, beyond god and jesus.
Mistake 4: We make a mistake if we try to resolve all the problems on good friday. the message of christianity is not just the cross, but that he was raised. the gospel that doesn’t have the LIFe of Jesus, the death of Jesus, and the RESURRECTION of jesus, and the (oneword holygost) aren’t complete.
the model is cracked. we need tohe model of
Mistake 5: we define sin toonarrowlhy. if sin is guilt, then the solution is the removal of guilt. problem is, that’s not biblical defintion of sin. it’s bigtime relational distortion. until we have the problemright we won’t have the solution right. the problem is NOT that you broke the law; it’s that you don’t love god, self, others, world correctly.
Mistake 6: we root the gospel in a god who is angry and wrathful rather than a god who is trinitarian and paracharetic (good word, huh?) – mutual indwelling and eternal interpenetration of persons of the trinity. relationa. that’s reality. if that’s reality then creation is the explosion of world into being.
god is not pissed off at human beings and ready to tip them into hell as john edwards said. yes, there is reality of hell; but god bahishes from eded but wants us to return to eden in christ.
Mistake 7: we preacdh a gospel that only restores us to god. not the other 3 directions. god wants to reconcile us to himself, but also that we are reconciled to hters, self, world. the gospel is big enough to heal us n 4 directions.
that’s why rose’s gospel is right, it’s not the social gospel.
Q: from Jim: why you blog, what hyave you learned form it?
a: I got accidentally stumped into blogging. an editor of a magazine said you should blog; i said what’s a blog. i started to wrte a blog, then da carson wrote a book, then tallskinnykiwi wanted to respond, then scot responded to the book, etc. I see it as an extension of my teaching mnistry. then the mark driscoll thing started ,and i basically siad, ‘hey, you chrsitians in seattle get along’.
q: tell me about your thinkiers form blog
a: you can either read blogs or write blogs. john frye. michael cruse. jim martin.
q: women bloggers:
a; yeah, i wanted to hear women in ministry, regularly. i’ wanted to just keep the discussion on the table for a long long time. if you keep the convesation on the table, it won’t go away.
q: but for 2k years, justice hasn’t worked, right? why not?
a: i bbelieve that many times we’ve defined justice by the us consituation -0 by equal rights, right to happiness. justice in teh bible is the environment for all eikons to love god and otehrs, self and system. it’s the rsponsibility for us to love the church and spread it. i have no eschatologiy that includes bush, barrack obama, hillary, mitt romney, etc. i believe that the gospel of jesus can create justice if the church lives as it should. i believe justice in the bible is ‘what is riht’. for the eikon it is to love god, self, otehrs, system – participate in world as we’re supposed to. we’ve narrowed it down and defined it in economic categories adn personal freedoms. i believe in responsibilities. to god, world, others..
