[edit: Pat, 9:43pm Sat night; trying to communicate better]

I’ve noticed an odd sensation when we have guests who are “just passing through”. Specifically the visitors that we have who are passing through town or just visit from somewhere else, whom we know that we won’t see again.

Let me elaborate a bit. I love seeing guests drop in. Family members, folks who are driving through and saw our sign. But it feels strange to me, though, because we downplay the Experience of a Sunday worship time and up-play (is that a word?) the missional nature of the church. Every week, I get on my high horse and talk about the purpose of our gathering time being both to worship God here and now, and to be refreshed and equipped for the ministry in the week ahead. As such, attracting people who aren’t part of, nor looking to connect with, our own community and mission feels odd.

I wonder what it feels like for the black urban church to have white suburbanites stop by just to see how they worship. Or for people to stop in to Church of the Savior because they’re well known. Or the Anaheim Vineyard when John Wimber was still alive, or for people to go to the church where Martin Luther King used to preach.

In our environment, it’s weird to think of a church gathering as something like a tourist destination. A new restaurant to try when traveling.

Now, I always hope and pray that EVERYONE experiences a connection with God as we gather together – no less so for our visitors. And certainly people who Just Pass Through are usually committed disciples who want to worship God with other parts of the body.

But there’s a misfit that I sense, though, even as we welcome Just Passing Through visitors. I guess it’s the misfit of having people gather with us for a different purpose than that of being missionaries from our own community, which is our purpose for existing.

Does any of this make sense, or am I just ranting oddly again?

Kind of presumptuous aren’t you? You said “the purpose of our gathering time being both to worship God here and now, and to be refreshed and equipped for the ministry in the week ahead.” It seems that you assume these visitors are not either worshipping God here and now or not being refreshed and equipped for the ministry in the week ahead. Can’t you just welcome them and hope the Lord does refresh and equip them for the week ahead? Just though I would ask.

Dang, I knew I wasn’t communicating this one very well 😦 You’re right, Mark. I do want to welcome them and expect the Lord to refresh them; I just find myself feeling oddly because we’re working in different mission fields – there’s more of a spectator role in the life of the church than a participant role, if that makes sense.

Let me see if I can put this in a better way. When you and I get to worship with our friends in Nicaragua (or Columbus, or…), does it feel different to you? Good still, but different because your responsibility in that community is different? Participants still, but on a different level?

Perhaps when we have Just Passing Through folks come to worship with us, I should expand myunderstanding of what’s happening from the local church context to the Kingdom context. (Not a bad idea in general, right?)

I’m going to re-edit this post – tell me if it makes any more sense, or is still presumptuous.

“ranting oddly again” Is it because they are not involved in your mission? I guess I view it as a kingdom thing. Just be glad they chose to bless you by showing up on Sunday. Yes it is different when we “go” somewhere. It is different but I can be missional in my community or in Nicaragua, it just my perspective and my willingness to serve. If we look for what the Father is doing and join in that wherever we are, thats missional. PS. Its fun to bust you chops once in a while. 🙂

I was starting to wonder if you’d given up on me 🙂 It’s been so long since Mark’s Corrective Action was displayed 😉
