I ran into a brief comment on somebody’s simple church blog yesterday that has captured my attention. I’m sorry that I can’t remember where I found it, but if this looks familiar to you leave me a comment so I can credit you.
It went along the lines of, “we get together to try to understand what it means to be disciples of Jesus. We don’t call ourselves ‘believers’, but we’re pretty convinced that’s not what Jesus intended for us to call ourselves anyway.”
It’s been my understanding that in the Hebrew language and worldview, “belief” and “action” were inseparable – you do what you believe, and you believe in what you do. If what we tell people is that “believers” is their pinnacle, then is it any wonder that nobody actually ministers reconciliation in the world like Jesus did? Didn’t James say, “so, you say that you believe… good for you! even the demons can do that well…”
