Shannon and I and friends Kyle & Jessica who lead worship in our church went to see the Ben Harper & The Innocent Criminals show at the Moore theatre in Seattle last night. Woo-hoooo, what a show. The opening act is Tom Freund, who plays guitar and upright bass. I never knew the upright could be a lead instrument – that and a voice, and it’s all you need. Amazing stuff. His guitar work was nice too, great voice.
Ben Harper’s band is fantastic. Great job changing the vibe around, moving from reggae to funk to whatever else he does. He played 3 distinct sets for 3 hours. The closer was “With My Own Two Hands” with a special appearance and vocal jam with Eddie Vedder.
Even though we had crap seats in the second balcony, it was a fantastic show. Best I’ve been to in a long, long time.
As a side note, how can you not love a guy who has songs that begin with lyrics like, “I killed a snake with a Bible / I was living a Johnny Cash song”?
