★ Agape

Yesterday we spoke about love – the character of love described by John specifiically, and focusing on the meaning of the Greek agape. One of my study resources said:

“[…]Agape is not love of the worthy, and it doesn’t desire to possess the beloved. It’s given irrespective of merit, and it’s a love that seeks to give to others.

Agape seeks the highest good in the one loved, even though that one may be undeserving of that love. Hence its prominence in Biblical text.”

Today Jordon Cooper posted this quote, which I’ll simply repost:

“Our job is to love others without stopping to inquire whether or not they are worthy. That is not our business and, in fact, it is nobody’s business. What we are asked to do is to love, and this love itself will render both ourselves and our neighbors worthy if anything can.”
