I’ve been reading Foster’s Streams of Living Water as a gentle guide to spirituality, something I don’t need pen-and-highlighter for – unlike my ongoing read of Missional Church by Guder, which is going to wear out 3 highlighters by the time I finish it.

Streams takes each of the six traditions of Christianity and describes them, identifies an early church mother or father and then a later figure, and fleshes out the traditions. It’s as much chuch history as it is spirituality (and a reminder that these two topics should be inseparable anyway).

I’m currently in chapter 4 – The Charismatic Tradition: Discovering the Spirit-Filled Life, whose ancient study is Francis of Assisi.

Last night, in addition to Lewis, I picked up the copy of Mark Hegener’s mini-biography called The Poverello: St. Francis of Assisi. A while back my mom found a copy of it – and several other classics of spirituality – ina little bookstore/secondhand store in Idaho. I decided to start reading this one also, just to have a book that I could finish soon :-). More to come, I’m sure.
