When I made my first visit to Nicaragua this spring, our group went to Ometepe Island for a few days. A small rural island in Lake Nicaragua, Ometepe is stunningly beautiful. Geologically it is essentially two volcanoes on two ends on the island (one living, one dormant) and a small patch of land in between. I absolutely loved my time on the island, and hope to return there when my next trip to Nicaragua happens. I can’t wait.
The Seattle Times just did an article on Ometepe here. To be honest, I was not all that excited to hear about Ometepe being a tourist destination in a large newspaper, but that’s not my call 😦
The article did a good job both of describing the beatufy of the island, but also of describing the sister-island relationship between the Puget Sound island of Bainbridge and Ometepe. I hadn’t known about that relationship’s existence, and I’ll have to check out the Bainbridge side in the near future.
I really miss Nicaragua.
