Shannon and I went out last night for a Date. She had overheard somebody talking about an exhibition at the Seattle Art Museum so we started there. We found an exhibition of Vincent Van Gogh and several masters:

“Seventy-five masterpieces of modern painting and sculpture from one of Holland’s premier museums will travel to the Seattle Art Museum. Van Gogh to Mondrian features major works by Georges Seurat, Pablo Picasso, Ferdinand Léger, Piet Mondrian, and Vincent van Gogh, many never previously exhibited in the United States.” (S.A.M. website)

I’m not going to write about God’s hand behind these works, or how postmoderns intuit truth through art, or sermon illustrations I happened upon. I’m just going to write that this work was absolutely beautiful.

I’m not a typical art fan. I like some things, I don’t like others. I’m not a wine and cheese exhibition type person. But I do like beauty, and I do like experiencing greatness.

Seeing Van Gogh’s broad, thick brushstrokes from inches away mesmerized me. Being introduced to the pointillism style, in which color is not mixed but dots of colors are placed next to each other to give the eye a hint toward blending color – that was fascinating. I finally began to grasp the reasons behind and beauty of cubism by seeing the playful dialogue-by-art between Picasso and his neighbors.

If you’re in or near Seattle, go visit this exhibit. Especially if you want to experience beauty.

We had Japanese food for dinner. I got sick when we returned home. It was worth it.
