Because this weekend’s Father’s Day, and because we’re at the Lord’s Prayer in Matthew 6, I wanted to do something powerful with our approach to celebrating dads.

It seems to me that the most powerful moment on film that captures the father-son relationship is the end of Field of Dreams.

I haven’t yet met a man who doesn’t get teary-eyed at the end of that film, when the central figure of the movie encounters his father. It’s simple, yet emotionally powerful.

I’ll play chapter 33 and 34 this weekend.

We’ll also use Volume 1 (“Rain”) from Nooma Films. Rob Bell does a fantastic job of storytelling-as-sermon, and this volume explores God as Protector. Last weekend we use Volume 6 (“Kickball”) in our exploration of Father-God-as-Provider.

If you haven’t checked out Nooma Films, they’re the best of a burgeoning industry. I saw one, went out and bought all 7, and we’ve used 5 of them in one setting or another right now: mostly sermon help, but also small groups and our vineyard 101 class.
